The Undergraduate Major
The Bachelor of Arts degree in Linguistics is designed to develop students' knowledge and analysis of language phenomena, to challenge students' critical and analytical skills through exploring in small seminars various aspects of syntax, semantics, phonetics/phonology, morphology, historical linguistics, second language acquisition, and bilingualism. The undergraduate typically begins a major by taking the Introduction to Linguistics course. Junior and Senior courses include seminars in various aspects of general linguistics as well as specific courses on the linguistics attributes in the language of their choice. Students are encouraged to make links with language and culture as well as language and literature. Majors are encouraged to double-major with other languages offered by the department (French, German, Italian, Spanish).

The 4 Core Linguistic courses are required by all majors.
LIN 3010 Introduction to Linguistics (3 credits).
LIN 4326 Contrastive Phonology (3 credits).
LIN 4905/6835 Morphology and Syntax (3 credits).
FOL 3880 Research and Bibliographic Methods (3 credits).

2 Courses in Language & Culture are required by majors in the language of specialization.
FRE/GER/ITA/SPN 3400 Advance Language & Culture I or
                 FRE3340/SPN3342 French/Spanish for Bilinguals
FRE/SPN 3500/GET 2002/ ITT 2500 Culture and Civilization or Culture and Society

2 Courses in the Literature of the language of choice are required
French: FRW 3001, FRW 3100, FRW 3101, FRW 3122
German: GEW 3100, GEW 3101, GEW 3102
Italian: ITW 3100, ITW 3101, ITT 2520
Spanish: SPW 3030, SPW 3100, SPW 3101, SPW 3130, SPW 3132

5 Departmental electives (15 credits) are required to be chosen in consultation with the advisor.
