MA in Linguistics
There are two options for the MA in Linguistics; with thesis and without thesis. The MA degree with thesis option requires a minimum of 30 credit hours--24 of course work and six of thesis credit. The non-thesis option requires 36 credit hours of course work and a comprehensive exam.

For all graduate work students must earn a B or better to receive credit toward the degree. Students who earn a B- or less will have to retake the course or substitute another in order to receive credit.

Comprehensive Examination for Linguistics MA with Non-Thesis Option

1. The student's advisory committee of three faculty members will prepare a comprehensive written examination based on the students course work and a previously agreed on reading list tailored to the student's interests and area of specialization.

2. The examination will consist of written questions on the basics of general linguistics, the basics of the linguistics of the language of specialization, the application of linguistics to a particular area of study such as the teaching of reading, composition, or second language acquisition. The examination may last up to six hours.

3. An oral examination will be left to the discretion of the student's committee--based on their interpretation of the results of the written examination.

Application Procedure:

Students wishing to pursue the Master of Arts in Linguistics must satisfy all university graduate admission requirements. Applications, and information on University graduate admission requirements, are available through Graduate Admissions. In addition, applications should include a brief (2-3pp) statement of qualifications and primary purpose in graduate study.
