FAU's interdisciplinary Program in Linguistics in the Department of Languages and Linguistics offers Bachelor of Arts and the Master of Arts Degrees in Linguistics.

What is Linguistics?
Linguistics is the study of language in all its manifestations. The various subfields of linguistics rely on close connections with other disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, sociology, anthropology, education, translation and cognitive science.

Linguists concern themselves with questions such as: How do languages differ? What do they have in common? How and why do languages change? How do children learn language? How does a person's language influence their thinking? How does language reflect society and culture?
The contributions of linguists are important to disciplines like Education, Artificial Intelligence, Software Development, Voice Recognition Technology, Speech Pathology, Search Engine Development, Telecommunications, and Translation, as well as professional fields such as Advertising, Editing and Publishing, Government Service, Journalism, Law, and the Media.

Admission requirements for the graduate program are (1) an average of B or better in the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate courses, and (2) a combined total score of 1000 or better on the combined verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Examination. Exceptions for meeting both requirements are sometimes made by petition. Course work may be started before being admitted to the program. Graduate teaching assistantships with tuition waivers are sometimes possible in our foreign language fields (see above), English, and Communication for qualified applicants with previous degrees or training in those areas.
