Introduction to Linguistics - (LIN 3010) 3 credits
Study of the nature of language, its origin and structure. Open to non-majors.

Contrastive Phonology - (LIN 3326) 3 credits
Prerequisite: LIN 3010 or permission of instructor
A phonetic and phonemic level comparison of the phonology of English, French, German and Spanish. Recommended for teachers and students of these four languages.

Bilingualism - (LIN 3620) 3 credits
Prerequisite: LIN 3010 or permission of instructor
Language and cognition, language acquisition in the bilingual child, bilingual influences upon learning, the psychological and sociocultural aspects of bilingualism, especially in Spanish-English speaking communities.

Psycholinguistics - (LIN 3701) 3 credits
Prerequisite: LIN 3010 or permission of instructor
Psychology of language and communication; mechanics of language learning in relation to behavior and thinking.

Language & Meaning - (LIN 4025) 3 credits
Prerequisite: None
An exploration of the relation of meaning to grammar. A critical examination of the question of whether syntactic and morphological patterns are "autonomous" from the meaning they represent.

Applied Linguistics & TESOL - (TSL 4251) 3 credits
Applying linguistics, psycholinguistics, and sociolinguistics to teaching English as a second language with emphasis on pronunciation, intonation, structural analysis, morphophonemics and decoding from print to sound.

Black English - (LIN 4612) 3 credits
An introduction to the structure, history, and educational implications of Black English.

Directed Independent Study - (LIN 4905) 1-3 credits
Prerequisite: LIN 3010 or permission of instructor
Reading and research in advanced subjects in Linguistics. For third- and fourth-year students in good standing only, with the program of study prearranged in consultation with instructor.

Special Topics - (LIN 4930) 1-3 creditsize=2>=2>
Prerequisite: LIN 3010 or permission of instructor
Intensive study of special topics in linguistics. Since content will vary, course may be repeated for credit.

Linguistics & Reading - (LIN 5745) 3 credits
The application of linguistic knowledge to the teaching of reading.
